I ❤️ corporate events! I chalked 12 boards for Taco Bell this week, 3 of which were auctioned off for the Taco Bell Foundation. This one was my favorite! I got to preview the new 2025 Taco Bell menu, too. The quesocrisp taco is my favorite!

Sometimes clients have me working live at the event as a performance, whether it be on a board or on the ground. Sometimes they want the piece(s) done ahead of time so that they can use them for photos during the event. I can do it all!

Checking in- This is my aura progression from 2021 to 2024, all done in Polaroids using Kirlian Photography. This has been an ongoing art project since 2014, when I first visited Cali (scroll down my feed to see previous documentation).

This set is especially significant since it documents my only pregnancy- I had an aura photo taken each trimester. I used to have exclusively orange/yellow auras in the beginning, but as I’ve grown in the world I have more blues (calmness, intuition) and magentas (happiness, connectedness).

Fun note: I had an aura photo done on the other side of the world at a spiritual center who used the camera to try to change everyone’s aura to magenta, as they believed that was the best frequency from which to live life.

As an artist, I have always been drawn to color and emotions and this experiment pairs the two beautifully. I just love this project.

Today’s the first anniversary of the day we said goodbye to White Fang. I did this 3d piece in remembrance of her at a festival last year. It was emotional for me. Here’s what I had written to accompany this drawing:

In Loving Memory of White Fang

White Fang was my first pet as an adult, adopted when I was 19. My husband (then fiancé) and I adopted her when she was three months old. At the Petsmart where we met her for the first time, she growled and hissed. The volunteer assured us that this was not normal for “K.C.” (Kitty Cat) and we believed her. We took her to Zestos and tried to feed her french fries and chicken nuggets. She was a terrible kitten- After the first two weeks of living with her, we debated if we should give her back. We were too embarrassed to do it (the adoption process was rigorous. Rightly so as we were so young) so we ended up keeping her. I’m so glad we did. Over the years, she had many nicknames, but Fang stuck with her. She was the sweetest cat, only favoring my husband and I, and growled and hissed at anyone who wasn’t us. She lived with us in five different places in Atlanta and even made the trek to California with us in 2018. She loved to snuggle and get “snick snicks”. When I was pregnant in 2021, she would lay on my tummy and hug it with her arms. As my daughter grew, her kicks in my stomach would make Fang bounce around it would make me laugh and laugh. She was ill and diagnosed with a thyroid condition for the last few years of her life, but we didn’t mind the daily administrations of medication or constant vet visits. Fang passed away in January of 2024 and will be forever missed. This artwork is in memory of my precious fur baby, who has crossed the rainbow bridge.

I was hired to do the chalkboard at the Woodshed in Vista as a surprise for the bride. I just love how it turned out!!! Drawing glass always looks weird and smudgy to me but it photographs well… I guess that’s all that matters? 😂

Y’all, check out this surface! The client warned that it would be challenging… It was dirty with over a half inch thick of dirt (swipe to see video of the leaf blower). Then 3 hours to tempera because there was still so much dirt that it mixed into the paint and wouldn’t stick... And lastly, that surface 👏 ate 👏 up my chalk. I do love a challenge! Hard to get a lot of detail on this kind of surface but I did my best. Pic of the distortion and of the surface up close if you swipe. Another 3d piece complete!

The American Society of Nephrology had its annual meeting in SD this year, and as its attendees strolled around for lunches and breaks, they got to watch me work. They wanted a quintessential “San Diego” vibe, so I leaned in heavy with the palm trees and highlighted the many surf buses that drive around here and the stinky but adorable La Jolla seals. Che Fico! I chalked a 3D gelato for Bella Vita Fest this weekend. Drawing food always makes me hungry! It took about 5 hours to draw on site from start to finish- 2 of those hours was waiting for the base paint to dry! 4’ wide by 8’ tall. The festival theme was anything Italian! Made this 3d chalk art for the #PWX2024 conference. The piece was sponsored by the Bobcat Company and showed three of their products helping repair a dilapidated city. I've included some detail shots and photos from the wrong perspective so you can see the distortion of the piece in real life. Through a camera lens, the image is forced to look 3 dimensional, like there's really a hole in the ground!

This week, I teamed up with UCSD Health to celebrate their Honor Roll Award from U.S. News and World Report. I got to create fun and colorful chalk art at Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, Hillcrest Medical Center in San Diego, and one of their corporate offices over the span of a few days.

I replicated the same piece at all 3 locations. The wide variety of surfaces made for some interesting results!

It was awesome working with the UCSD Health marketing team, especially when the hospital’s leadership came out to take photos with the finished artwork. Congrats to UCSD Health on this amazing achievement! It was a pleasure to be part of your celebration.

People often ask if I get to choose what I draw. It depends on the event- Some people have a theme or an idea they want me to run with and others let me draw whatever I want. I love drawing animals, birds especially because I used to have dozens of birds as a teenager- over 70 parakeets at one point! My grandfather would take me to bird shows outside of Atlanta and he bought an Eastern Rosella there once. He taught it to sing Love Me Tender and it would squawk all of the time and beg for cheerios. I chose to draw a Rosella at the @cityofyucaipa Arts and Music Festival in memory of my grandpa. I think that when I choose to draw something I’m passionate about, it’s much more enjoyable and it turns out better than it would otherwise. So this one’s for you, grandpa! Thanks for encouraging me to be creative. I still think of you every day (photo hanging in my studio).

The DIA annual conference is in San Diego this week! They asked me to create a custom, interactive 3d chalk piece with the theme "Charting New Horizons". This project was in planning mode for months and finally came to fruition over the weekend. This piece will be seen and photographed with thousands of people at the convention center over the next five days. This piece was applied directly to the floor, which was buffed and challenging to work with... but I am thrilled with how it turned out!

Don’t fall in! 🙅🏻‍♀️ 😂 Don’t worry, it’s a drawing! This was a challenging 3d chalk piece but the work paid off. 31 hours from start to finish, 11 of that was actually chalking the piece on site which was (miraculously) done in one day at the Yucaipa Art and Music Festival. It was cool to see people interact with the art! I have a bunch of 3d pieces planned for 2024 so I can keep learning about anamorphic artwork and growing as an artist. In this piece, I used a lot of shadow and played with the idea that detail doesn’t have to go everywhere… difficult for me. Thank you for having me again, @cityofyucaipa ❤️

Feliz Día De Los Muertos! Happy Day of the Dead! Most artists have something they absolutely hate drawing. For me, it’s flowers. They’re so confusing and frustrating and can easily look like a blob if you aren’t too careful. So this piece was a challenge, but I think I finally got the hang of them!

This is an original piece of a young girl dressed as La Catrina, created for California State Parks for the Day of the Dead festival in Old Town. I’m so grateful to have been chosen as one of the featured artists. The CSP team was the sweetest group of people and I enjoyed talking to the many, many people that stopped to watch me work. They’re going to pressure wash it off the ground on Friday, so if you’re near Old Town, go check it out!

Recent work for the Mission San Luis Rey in North County San Diego, who is celebrating their 225th anniversary this year! Surprisingly this is the first Christian iconography piece I’ve done before. This is Mother Dolores, a sorrowful version of Mary. None of these images exist in real life. I was recently invited to beta Dall-E 2, an artificial intelligence system that creates realistic images from words that I give it. These are some of our recent collaborations:

Image 1- “a fluffy white turkish angora dressed as david bowie in outer space”
Image 2- “3d rendering of a pair of scissors against a teal background”
Image 3- (The AI got confused but made this AMAZING painting instead. Such a cool gaffe!) “a tabby cat dressed as a pink cowgirl with Sedona in the background”
Image 4- “an empty forest filled with hundreds of butterflies”

I toyed a lot with the original Dall-E, and it was much more crude than this version. The leap is amazing! I think this will be an amazing resource when it’s released to the public, especially for visual artists who rely heavily on reference material like myself. The creators of Dall-E are giving the humans that collaborate with the AI the ability to commercialize it and sell it. What do you think?

One of my artistic hobbies is having my aura photographed. It started in 2014 when my partner and I went to LA and I had a digital photo of my aura taken at a shop in Santa Monica. Since then, it’s become something I do regularly to see how I change and shift, though now I exclusively seek out aura photos made with polaroids. This is just a snippet of the dozens in my collection, which I keep in a super fancy photo album in my studio. I have always been drawn to color and emotions and this experiment pairs the two beautifully. I’ve also extensively studied the chakra system in my yogic pursuits which tie into these colors and their significance, too. I just love this project.

Ok here’s something a little different- Today marks THREE years since Oya Yoga opened and I was working with the builder to design the exterior (swipe to see- yikes!) without knowing what I was doing AND I had the honor of hand-painting the exterior signs, designing their tshirts, and even painting their well-known murals before they opened. This was when I was learning how to use Procreate and I was so lost!!! It’s cool to see your vision come to life and to see how much you’ve grown in just a few years. Throwing it back to 2014 (!!!!) and one of my first large-scale street paintings. I had no idea how to manage my time so my good friend Heather @impurple22 jumped in and helped me out! Someone saw my chalk art Shiva and commissioned me to do a meditating Shiva painting for their yoga space! I’ve been developing this style for a few years now and this painting is the one that taught me the most... I loved it so much that I made myself one, too! Mixed media on canvas.

San Diego Chalk Artist (formerly Atlanta Chalk Artist) was founded in 2015. Principal artist Katie Bush has two art degrees and has been active as a professional chalk artist since 2013, branching into sign lettering and design in 2014. Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, she co-founded the Georgia Chalk Artists Guild. She moved to southern California in 2018.

Katie provides high quality chalk art and painted mural services for San Diego, Los Angeles, and beyond. She is available for travel and often jets around the country to create chalk art or painted murals.

Katie has experience with traditional chalk, soft pastels, sidewalk chalk, chalk pens, and has developed her own permanent chalk treatment.

When not chalking, Katie loves to cook, read, and practice/teach yoga. You can learn more about Katie’s other artistic abilities on her personal website.
